Last week I was privileged enough to join an elite crew of musicians down at DJ Jazzy Jeff's Playlist Retreat. It's a hand-selected group of individuals with super-powers ranging from the production space to the DJ space to the instrument & vocalist space to the event space to the online space. Lots of people with lots of skills in lots of spaces. I've been honoured to share what I do in my spaces at Playlist Retreat over the years since it's inception in 2016, and this year I was given the title of "Camp Counselor", as one of the leaders who helps all of the people in all the spaces gel into one big comfortable unit for 4 incredible days.One artist who occupies some of these spaces is a man named CARRTOONS, a multi-instrumentalist and producer from NYC who released his 4th album smack dab in the middle of the Playlist Retreat week. "Space Cadet" is out now on Wichita Recordings, clocking in just under 40 minutes and jam packed with jams. Much like Playlist, the album is a snapshot of a current recording artist landscape, featuring familiar (at least around Tuesday Morning Coffee's circle) names like Rae Khalil, Phonte (of Little Brother), The Kount, Datsunn, and one of my favorite new voices Haile Supreme, who is featured twice, including on the great pre-release cut "Labor of Love".I feature that song here, as well as two others: the lead single "Cascade" featuring Wiki (not wookie), Rae Khalil, and The Kount, and "Tightrope" featuring Phonte, Topaz Jones, and BeMyFiasco. 3 tracks that should have you reaching for this LP on your favorite streaming service or, even better, Bandcamp ( https://carrtoons.bandcamp.com/album/space-cadet ). Following those tracks, I cracked into new material by Rapsody & Madlib under the name MadRaps (she goes offff) and Nova Scotia's own Aquakulture, featuring Gary Beals & Hailey Smith.
