We join Haitian DJ/producer Michaël Brun at W1 Curates Studios to explore how to make a Kompa beat.The Port-au-Prince-born, New York-based artist has made an international impact while championing the sounds of his home nation.In this episode, Brun introduces us to Kompa, a popular traditional dance sound from Haiti that was pioneered in the 1950s, usually comprising electric guitar, vocals, horns, and drums. Using Ableton and the Teenage Engineering OP-1, Brun walks us through his use of percussive elements, plug-ins and voice notes to create his contemporary electronic interpretation of this beloved sound.DJ Mag's Beat from Scratch series gives a unique insight into an artist's creative process in the studio.
