Today’s ROTW is Kaytranada’s “Seemingly”, a brilliant instrumental piece from a young man whose sound is proving to be Timeless (as his excellent new album’s title suggests). Built around samples from rare groove favourite (yet still highly underrated by the masses) Don Blackman, the track channels not one but two songs from his under-appreciated-at-release self titled debut album.Kaytra is one of a rare few modern artists whose influence has altered music as we know it. His approach to blending R&B, hip-hop, house, along with Haitian kompa and other rhythmic driven musics is unique in a way that it finds a middle ground respecting all of the sounds while creating something totally new sounding. I do not write in hyperbole when I say he altered music: his sonic disciples (and clones) fill Soundcloud, where he made his first breakthrough during the site’s heyday, and also across plenty of new albums from across the genres from which he derives his sound. Wisely, perhaps instinctively but more than likely just artistically, he has continued to evolve his sound and bangs out an incredibly high level of quality, forward-thinking, danceable, melodic music. What more can you ask for.Well, maybe you could ask that I do a deep dive on one of his sonic influences after playing the song he sampled them in. I did just that on stream last week, as I dove in to the the majority of Don Blackman’s discography. I started with the two *different* tracks that Kaytranada sampled on “Seemingly”,a sampling task not as easy as it sounds, or at least yielding results this good. Especially when they are both cult classics in the rare groove circle. I don’t want to spoil the fun moments created during the stream yesterday, so I urge you to watch it in full if you haven’t. Check the VIP ( http://www.skratchbastid.com/vip ) for the whole stream, or this week’s ROTW YouTube post where I included the DB deep dive. Because why not! More people need to hear Don, and when you’re tied to one of modern music’s greats like he is on his new album, you gotta share the love.Enjoy the musical adventure today :)If you like this video, there are many more like it at http://www.skratchbastid.com/vip at my Top Grillin' VIP club — hundreds, actually.
